Amelia Streeter was Julius Chapman's first wife. She and their baby died in childbirth, while Julius was home on a medical leave from the Civil War. Her death was referred to as caused by "dropsy", which would today be called Toxemia.
She is buried in Brookdale Cemetary, No. Stockholm NY. Thanks to Marsha Chapman, No Stockholm NY, we have a picture of her gravestone. The stone appears have been erected by her father Benjamin Streeter.
The inscription is below:
CHAPMAN: Lot 89, Section B, Row 5
Amelia A Chapman, Dau of Benjamin and Amelia Streeter d June 22, 1865, AE 25 yrs 3 months.
Julius, Son of Benjamin and Amelia Streeter, died July 5, 1868 AE 20 yrs (brother of Amelia Streeter Chapman)
It would appear Julius stayed at home with continued Typhoid illness until Amelia went into labor and died June 25, 1865. Julius Chapman reported back to Douglas Hospital in Washington D.C. on July 9, 1865 and was charged with disertion. He had only been given a 60 day medical leave in June 1864 to go home to No Stockholm NY to recuperate.
As he continued to be ill, he was placed in a D.C. hospital and in August 1865 his charges were reduced to Absent Without Leave. In September, 1865 his charges were dropped all together.
Julius's second wife Lillian Hodges (our Great Grandmother) wrote a letter to the Civil War Pension Board (see notes-Julius Chapman), indicating Julius had actually been married before and his first wife had died from "dropsy". Julius received a pension of $30 per month untill his death in 1918.
